A Cross-Country Ski Experience To Remember

Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and Yosemite High Country

Travel Alert:The Glacier Point Ski Hut will not open for the 2021-22 season due to lack of power. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and we hope to welcome you at the hut next season. The Nordic Center at Badger Pass Ski Area is scheduled to operate as usual, including the Glacier Point Ski Trail, with cross-country ski rentals, lessons and snowshoeing opportunities. If you are interested in staying at one of the accommodations in Yosemite Valley as an alternative, please call us at 888.413.8869 or hit the “Check Rates” button at the upper right to inquire about reservation options.

The Glacier Point, which towers 3,200 feet above the valley floor, offers some of the most incredible views in all of Yosemite — including Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, and the Yosemite High Country. In wintertime the only way to reach Glacier Point is via cross-country skiing or snowshoe.

The Ski Hut at Glacier Point

The Ski Hut is a rustic lodge located at Glacier Point and is only operational in the wintertime. Here, you'll find a charming dining area, comfortable sofas, a wonderful woodstove, and indoor bathrooms. There is also a large single-room bunk bed area that sleeps up to 20 skiers.

Travel to Glacier Point and Back in a Single Day

Distances and Itinerary

It’s 10.5-miles from Badger Pass Ski Area to Glacier Point on intermediate rolling terrain. You’ll be carrying a backpack with all of your gear at over 7,000 feet in elevation where there’s less oxygen. In stormy conditions, you may have to break trail. Intermediate skiers in good condition should allow 4 to 5 hours of skiing each way in good conditions. In poor weather, it’s possible that the one-way trip could take as long as 10 hours. Days are short, and nights are cold — and you should be prepared to ski in the dark and spend the night outdoors in case of an emergency. Skiing to Glacier Point is not something that novice cross-country skiers should attempt.

Schedule your trip, and keep track of your progress while following these essential tips:

  • Always keep track of your time and be aware of how much energy you have, so you make good decisions and stay safe.
  • Establish cut-off points and commit that if you're not at a specific point by a certain time, you'll turn around so you can make it to shelter before night falls.
  • 晚餐从晚上6点到晚上8点。晚上8点以后会有食物供应,但你会错过当天晚上准备的饭菜。

The chart below will give you a sense of ski times from point to point. Always be aware of how much energy you have in reserve, as your pace will slow when you become more tired.

Emergencies and Rescues

Rescues and emergency assistance are under the jurisdiction of The National Park Service. If there’s an emergency, dial 911. The most common emergencies are unprepared or underprepared skiers. The smartest thing you can do is to always be prepared to spend the night outdoors.

The hut keeper will be waiting for you if you have a reservation for lodging or a meal, so if you decide to turn around, make sure you let us know. We don't want to start an unnecessary search and rescue mission. Cell phone service is poor in the mountains, and there’s no cell coverage at the Badger Pass Ski Area. As you get closer to Glacier Point, it’s more likely that you’ll have cell phone service. Therefore, you should contact us before you leave the Badger Pass Ski Area, using the phones in the main building. Dial 9 first and then one of the local numbers below. If you call after hours, please leave a message.
